Dr. Ramakrishnan began his career as the In charge of Aravind Eye Hospital, Theni in 1987 and then the Chief of Glaucoma clinic in 1988.  After served several years as Chief Medical Officer & Professor of Ophthalmology at Aravind Eye Hospital, Tirunelveli, currently he is the Advisor of Tirunelveli Hospital.

Dr. Ramakrishnan graduated in medicine, D.O, and M.S from Madurai Medical College.  He had his basic glaucoma training under Dr. George Speath of Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia and Dr.Jacob T. Wilensky, Eye and Ear Infirmary, University of Illinois, Chicago in 1989.

Dr. Ramakrishnan has published more than 40 papers in peer reviewed journals. He has published a text book on Glaucoma for Post Graduate and Ophthalmologists. Also he published a book called கண்ணே நலமா?for the general public.

Dr. Ramakrishnan’s main area of interest is glaucoma. He was instrumental in establishing the Glaucoma department at Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai in 1989 and since then he is the Chief of Glaucoma Services of Aravind Eye Care System. He established the Aravind Zeiss Centre of Excellence in Glaucoma at Aravind Eye Hospital, Tirunelveli in 2002 with state of the art Instruments and equipment’s for the early diagnosis and management of Glaucoma.

He started long term and short term Glaucoma fellowship training program and trained more than 500 fellows from India and other countries. As a clinician he has performed approximately close to one lakh eye surgeries including Cataract, Glaucoma and laser procedures.

He has served as the President, Glaucoma Society of India from 2002 to 2004 and also he has held many distinguished posts as Organizing Secretary for Glaucoma Society of India Conference and Organizing Secretary of Tamil Nadu Ophthalmic Association conference.

He is actively involved in community work for more than 26 years. He was the Chief surgeon for the most of the surgical cataract camps. He was the Chief surgeon for the World first largest IOL camp in Ganeshpuri, Maharashtra in 1990.

Dr. Ramakrishnan has received many awards like Best Teacher award by M.G.R. Medical University, Dr.K.S.Sanjeevi award, Best Video award, Best Poster award at AIOS conference, Vocational excellence award by Rotary Club, Dr.Joseph Gnanadickam Memorial Gold medal Oration Award – 61st Annual Conference of TNOA – 2013 at Chennai etc.
