Established in 1976 as 11 bedded eye clinic, today Aravind Eye Care System is one of the largest facilities in the world for eye care.  Aravind is built extensively on the support of paramedic staff-optometrists, counsellors, theatre nurses and patient-care administrators’ all of whom are trained in the respective hospitals.  Eighty percent of Aravind’s employees are women, and the majority of them are paraprofessionals.  Rather than depend on externally trained staff, Aravind took an innovative and self-reliant approach to recruitment and training – not just of nurses, but of doctors too.  More than 90 percent of Aravind’s ophthalmologists are products of its own training.
